An Umno leader is behind a plot to topple the government with the support of opposition lawmakers, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
The Umno vice-president said that as home minister, he had learned that they were preparing statutory declarations (SD) to remove the government.
"There is an effort to obtain SDs among the opposition lawmakers and to pull in Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers to topple the government.
"I received this information from very trusted sources. This effort is going on... The strange thing is that it is led by an Umno, BN member," Zahid said when officiating the annual general meeting of Umno's Ampang division today at Dewan Dato' Setia Mufti Shuib in Kuala Lumpur.
However, he did not reveal the identity of the Umno leader, saying it would be "exposed on its own".
Zahid said the movement was ongoing, and a lawyer was already preparing to present a seven-page memorandum made up of yellow paper, with the SDs attached, to show that they represented the majority.
"This is a serious matter. They cannot wait until the next election. They want to enter through the back door," said Zahid.
"They are not only stabbing the party in the back, but they are destroying the institution of democracy."
He said as home minister, he will not allow any efforts to oust the government to succeed, and urged Umno to rise up and prevent the plan from becoming a reality.
Zahid also told delegates in the hall not to sabotage their own party, saying those who did so were mentally unstable.
"Don't drill a hole into the ship. We have to sail this ship together. That's the right way.
"Instead, we have a person who has taken a screwdriver and is drilling a hole into the ship. That leader is mentally unstable (masuk air)," said Zahid.
Rumours have been circulating that Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is attempting to overthrow the government, after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak dropped him from the Cabinet.
However, the former deputy prime minister has denied this repeatedly, and maintained he would never betray Umno.
Meanwhile, Asia Sentinel reported on Wednesday that Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had met with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form a unity government to remove Najib. – August 15, 2015.
